The APP Tour returns to the Lone Star State this week, heading to Houston for tournament number 14 of the season – the 2023 APP Houston Open, held October 25-29 at the Houston Memorial Park Tennis Center.
A few short weeks after wrapping up the APP Dallas Open, The APP hops down I-45 to Houston – returning to the site of last year’s tournament. Amateurs of all ages, elite pros and the AARP Champions (50+) and Masters (60+) Divisions will participate in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles competition throughout the week.
The stage is set for elite pickleball competition, as Susannah Barr, Andrei Daescu, Megan Fudge, Hunter Johnson, Rob Nunnery and Parris Todd look to defend their titles. APP Tour mainstays Shelby Bates, Judit Castillo, Ryler DeHeart, Salome Devidze, Vivian Glozman, Yates Johnson, Bobbi Oshiro, Will Sobek, Alix Truong, Lee Whitwell and members of the APP Next Gen National Team all return to action in Houston.
Double Doubles in Dallas
Megan Fudge and Hunter Johnson were the big winners in Dallas, taking home two gold medals apiece. Fudge won her second-straight women’s pro singles title, and another women’s pro doubles title alongside Barr. Fudge is also the defending women’s singles champion from last year’s APP Houston Open, held in October 2022. Fudge’s 24 total medals leads all APP women’s pros in 2023.
Texas Twins
Hunter Johnson took home men’s pro singles gold and mixed pro doubles gold with Todd in Dallas. His 23 total medals in 2023 are the second-most among APP pros. Johnson, like Fudge, is also the defending singles champion from the 2022 APP Houston Open. Yates Johnson’s 12 total medals are the fourth-most among APP men’s pros this season. The Johnson twins, natives of New Braunfels, TX, have won the men’s pro singles gold medal in 10 out of 13 APP Tour events this season.
Andrei the Giant
Andrei Daescu leads all APP pros with 25 total medals and 17 gold medals in 2023. The Romania native won another men’s pro doubles gold in Dallas alongside Nunnery, and silver in mixed pro doubles alongside Barr. Barr’s nine gold medals in 2023 are tied for second-most among APP women’s pros, while Nunnery’s 15 total medals are the third-most among APP men’s pros this season. Daescu and Nunnery have won six men’s pro doubles titles together this year, including three in a row, while Daescu and Barr have six mixed pro doubles golds as a team.
Parris Power
Parris Todd leads all APP women’s pros with 15 gold medals, and has two Triple Crowns in 2023. Todd and Hunter Johnson took home gold in mixed pro doubles in Atlanta and Dallas, and she and Simone Jardim have won eight women’s pro doubles golds together this season.
Dynamic Duo
Vivian Glozman and Alix Truong teamed up for women’s pro doubles bronze in Dallas, marking their fifth consecutive tournament earning a medal. Glozman and Truong will team up once again in Houston with their sights set on gold.
Determined Devidze
Salome Devidze earned silver in women’s pro singles in Dallas and will look to get back to the top of the podium in Houston. Devidze has medaled in six straight APP Tour events, bringing home two golds, three silvers, and one bronze. Devidze has five women’s singles golds in 2023.
